Memphis Grizzlies' Marc Gasol wins NBA Defensive Player of the Year honor

  • Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol was named as the 2012-13 NBA Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday. Gasol is the first Grizzlies player to win the award.

    He earned 30 first-place votes and a total of 212 points from a nationwide panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters.

    Miami's LeBron James came in second with 149 points and 18 first-place votes, followed by Serge Ibaka of Oklahoma City.

    Gasol has averaged 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals to go along with 14.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 80 games this season.

    He was one of only six players in the NBA to average at least 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals.
