November 19 , 2013
A 32-year-old participant in a free diving tournament drowned while trying to break a record at the International Free diving competition, which required him to dive the deepest without fins.
The man was identified as Nicholas Mevoli of New York.
The contest was nine-days-long and brought together 56 divers from all around the globe, who competed for a $20,000 prize.
The drowning occurred off the coast of Long Island in the Bahamas at Dean's Blue Hole, which is known to be the deepest seawater sinkhole in the world. The local doctor pronounced him dead after he was brought to ashore.
Mevoli held records for other two diving contests.
