Lawmakers attack Redskins' name
February 11 , 2014
Two members of Congress have attacked the Washington Redskins' name and Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell has asked the NFL to take action. "You're getting a tax break for educational purposes, but you're still embracing a name that people see as a slur and encouraging it," Cantwell said.
She sent a letter to NFL commissioner along with Republican Rep. Tom Cole noting that this issue can no longer be ignored and "virtually every major civil rights organization in America has spoken out in opposition to this name."
A Redskins spokesman replied to the attack and said Congress should deal with other important issues instead of worrying about a football team's name. "Given the fact that the name of Oklahoma means 'red people' in Choctaw, this request is a little ironic," he said.
