Kenya's Kimetto broke the course record at the Chicago Marathon

  • Dennis Kimetto finished the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours, 3 minutes and 45 seconds, beating the record set by Tsegaye Kebede last year.

The winner was all alone when he came close to the finish line; he won at Tokyo earlier this year.

Since this was the first major marathon after the one in Boston, there was a 30-second long silence in order to honor those who died in the bombings.

Rita Jeptoo completed the race in less than 2:20:00 and was the women's winner of the marathon; she receives $40,000 in addition to the $100,000 earned by the winners.

Kimetto is being awarded another $75,000 for breaking the course record.
