John Farrell signs on as Boston Red Sox manager

  • John Farrell was announced as the new manager of the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.

Farrell spent the previous two seasons as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, posting a record of 154-170.

He returns to Boston, where he was the pitching coach for Terry Francona from 2007 to 2010.

Farrell missed the opportunity to interview for the position last year after Francona's surprising departure.

The post opened again following Bobby Valentine's disastrous first season at the helm with permission from the Blue Jays.

Farrell was given a three-year contract with the Red Sox, who also picked up pitcher David Carpenter from Toronto and sent shortstop Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays as part of the deal.
