Joey Barton suspended over 'ladyboy' tweet
May 7 , 2013
Olympique Marseille midfielder Joey Barton has been suspended for two games calling Paris St. Germain's Brazilian defender Thiago Silva an 'overweight ladyboy' on Twitter, the Ligue 1 soccer club announced on Monday.
"The National Ethics Committee has handed a two-match suspended ban to Joey Barton for 'inappropriate comments' after his tweets about a Paris St Germain player," OM said on their website.
Barton, who has more than two million followers on Twitter, made the comments about Silva last month.
He also made comments about some of the PSG player's international teammates.
Silva did not respond to the tweets.
Barton arrived in France on loan from Queens Park Rangers after spending two-and-a-half months in prison for assault after a night out. At the time of the incident, he was already on bail for attacking former Manchester City teammate Ousmane Dabo.
He also stubbed out a cigar in youth-team player’s eye in 2004.
