Matthew Saad Muhammad, who fought some of the most exciting boxing matches, died in Philadelphia at the age of 59; the cause of his passing is yet unknown.
"Matthew Saad Muhammad was one of the most exciting boxers of all time. His drama-filled fights were thrilling and he was a real fan favorite," Executive Director of Hall of Fame said. "We join the boxing community in mourning his passing and offer our condolences to his family."
USA Today notes that Saad Muhammad was taken by his aunt after his mother died, but he was soon abandoned by her. He was then taken to the Catholic Social Services, where he got his first name. The man became a professional in 1974 and later changed his last name from Franklin to Saad Muhammad.
