Half-marathoner misses turn and wins 1st marathon

  • Meredith Fitzmaurice was the only one among the female runners to have finished the Ontario race on Sunday. Her story is extraordinary since she had never run more than 20 miles in the past and had decided to just run that much and call it a day.

However, mistakenly taking a wrong turn helped her finish the marathon. "I'm looking at the time and wondering where the finish line is," she said. At the 15-mile mark, Fitzmaurice realized there were only nine people ahead of her, excluding any women.

"I think at that point the adrenalin just pulled me through," she said.

Fitzmaurice finished 10th in place and qualified for the Boston Marathon. She mentioned that she regrets worrying her friends at the finish line and not having her family there to see it.

"Maybe this was meant to be," she said.
