Great Britain's Nicola Adams is first woman to win Olympic boxing gold

  • Great Britain's Nicola Adams has become the first female boxer to win an Olympic gold medal after beating China’s Ren Cancan in the Flyweight final.

Adams, 29, was beaten by Cancan in the finals of the 2010 and 2012 World Championships. She recorded a 16-7 Olympic victory against her Chinese opponent.

Women's boxing pioneer Barbara Buttrick, a world champion in the 1950s, was in the audience and said Adams’ achievements would encourage more girls to take up the sport.
