French Open: Serena Williams beats Lucie Safarova to claim 20th Grand Slam title

  • World number one Serena Williams beat 13th seed Lucie Safarova 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 to claim her third French Open and 20th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.

    The 33-year-old American, who was struggling against an illness for the past few days, took more than two hours to prevail over the Czech, who was playing her first Grand Slam final.

    Only Steffi Graf has won more Grand Slams in the open era.

    Meanwhile, world number one Novak Djokovic beat Britain’s Andy Murray 6-3 6-3 5-7 5-7 6-1 to reach the finals of the French Open.
