Federer loses to Tsonga in French Open quarterfinals

  • Roger Federer was beaten by Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets in quarterfinal play at the French Open on Tuesday.

    The 2009 French champ was defeated, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3.

    Tsonga, who also ousted Federer in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon two years ago, next faces fourth-seeded David Ferrer in the semis.

    Ferrer recorded a 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 win against fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo.

    The two remaining quarterfinals take place later today, as top-seeded Novak Djokovic plays Tommy Haas and Rafael Nadal takes on Stanislas Wawrinka.

    Serena Williams and Sara Errani were the women's quarterfinal winners.

    The top-seeded Williams racked up a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.

    She will next face Errani, the 2012 runner-up who beat Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

    Defending champion Maria Sharapova plays her quarterfinal match later today against Jelena Jankovic while two-time reigning Australian Open champ Victoria Azarenka will face Maria Kirilenko.
