Edmonton Oilers fire GM Tambellini

  • The Edmonton Oilers fired general manager Steve Tambellini on Monday.

Former player and coach Craig MacTavish has been newly appointed to the post.

Tambellini was in his fifth season with the Oilers as GM. The club's 38-35-9 mark during his first season of 2008-09 was its best during his tenure.

The Oilers are currently 16-18-7 and sit 12th in the Western Conference with seven games remaining in the shortened 2013 season.

The Oilers last reached the Stanley Cup finals after the 2005-06 season under MacTavish, who guided the team to a record of 301-252-82 in eight seasons.

He was sacked after the 2008-09 campaign and returned to the organization last summer as a senior vice president of hockey operations.
