The Czech Republic won its first Davis Cup as an independent nation, completing a 3-2 win over defending champion Spain on Sunday in the best-of-five final.
The Czechs maintained a 2-1 edge into the reverse singles but David Ferrer kept the Spaniards’ hopes alive with a 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Tomas Berdych in the first match.
Radek Stepanek then secured a 6-4, 7-6 (7-0), 3-6, 6-3 victory in the decisive match to take the title for the first time since a Czechoslovakia squad won it all in 1980.
Spain was vying for a sixth overall Davis Cup crown and fourth in five years.
