Cricket World Cup: Sri Lanka survive Afghan scare

  • Sri Lanka survived a scare by defeating Afghanistan by four wickets in a nail-biting finish in what was expected to be an easy victory for the former world champions.

Mahela Jayawardene’s 19th one-day century helped Sri Lanka edge past Afghanistan, who had reduced the Lankans to 18-3 in the Pool A World Cup match at Dunedin.

Afghanistan were earlier dismissed for 232, with Asghar Stanikzai scoring a half-century.

Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign has got off to a shaky start. They suffered a crushing loss against New Zealand in their first match.
