Beckham embarks on China soccer envoy role
March 21 , 2013
David Beckham arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to begin his new role as a special ambassador for Chinese soccer.
His appointment was announced earlier this month and follows a match-fixing scandal in China that resulted in dozens of top officials, players and referees being jailed or banned.
Beckham, 37, will balance the role while playing for Paris St-Germain.
His four-day visit includes taking part in training sessions with elementary schoolchildren and visits to soccer clubs in Beijing, Qingdao and Wuhan.
The former England captain is one of the most globally recognized names in the sport. He has won a league championship for Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy, three clubs he has played for on a permanent basis.
