Australian Open 2017: Serena Williams takes home 23rd grand slam title

  • Claiming yet another grand slam title, Serena Williams has surpassed Steffi Graf’s record of 23 by wining the Australian Open final against her sister, Venus.

The American now holds more Grand Slam titles in the Open era than anyone else. Martina Navratilova has 18 titles in her kitty, along with Chris Evert. Though Margaret Court owns 24, but only 11 of those were claimed after the Open era began in 1968.

Venus has credited her rise of becoming perhaps the greatest player of all time to Graf and Navratilova, from whom she learned mental strength and never giving up trait.

Williams said they all had one thing in common — fighting spirit.

The 35-year-old scored 6-4, 6-4 win at Melbourne Park and made a comeback to position of world number one.

19 years from her Grand Slam debut at the age of 17 in Melbourne in 1998, and the lady is not ready to stop. She insisted there are no new goals, despite Court's 24 titles being within reach.
