Anti-Gay Law in Russia will apply to Olympians
August 3 , 2013
Russia's sports minister said the country's anti-gay law will be in full effect during the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Vitaly Mutko said sportsmen with nontraditional sexual orientation can come to Sochi but they'd be held accountable if they start to propagandize it.
Mukto's comments seemed to undermine the claim of the International Olympic Committee, which assured the athletes that "the legislation will not affect those attending or taking part in the Games". The law forbids homosexuality to be talked about in the open around minors and bans public displays of affection.
