Actor and former football star Alex Karras dies aged 77

  • Former Detroit Lions legend Alex Karras passed away on Wednesday at the age of 77.

    Karras, who had been suffering from dementia and kidney failure, died at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by family members.

    Karras was selected by the Lions with the 10th overall pick in the 1958 NFL Draft out of Iowa and went on to play 12 seasons.

    He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and a member of the NFL's 1960s All-Decade Team.

    Following his retirement from the game in 1970, Karras embarked on an acting career.

    He was best known for his roles as Mongo in Blazing Saddles and as the father in the 1980s TV sitcom Webster.
