Voice of Sesame Street's Count von Count dies at 78

  • Jerry Nelson, the puppeteer and voice of Sesame Street's Count von Count, has died at the age of 78.

Nelson, who suffered from emphysema, passed away on Thursday in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

A Sesame Workshop statement said he would be remembered for "the laughter he brought to children worldwide".

Nelson was born in Oklahoma and raised in Washington D.C.

He began puppeteering for Bil Baird, who produced and performed the puppetry sequence in the film version of The Sound of Music.

Nelson's first job with the Muppets came in 1965 on The Jimmy Dean Show when he replaced Frank Oz as Rowlf the Dog's right hand.

He was best known as arithmetic-obsessed Count von Count and voiced the character from 1972 until his death, though he stopped operating the puppet in 2004.
