U.S. premiere of Jack Reacher postponed after Newtown shooting

  • The American premiere of the Tom Cruise action flick Jack Reacher has been postponed following the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that left 27 people dead.

Twenty children and six women were killed in the attack on Sandy Hook school by a man who then took his own life.

Paramount Pictures said the decision was taken "out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken".

The Pittsburgh premiere would have been Cruise's first U.S. media event since his split from wife Katie Holmes in June.

The film is slated to open in the U.S. on December 21.

It is not known yet if the U.S. premiere will be rescheduled.

Jack Reacher is a new franchise for Tom Cruise in which he plays an ex-military policeman.

The film opens with a sniper shooting dead several people.

The film was primarily filmed in Pittsburgh, which is why the U.S. premiere was to be held there.
