The Great Gatsby to open Cannes

  • Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby is to open the 66th Cannes Film Festival.

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 classic novel of the same name, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire and Carey Mulligan.

The Australian director's film will be shown on May 15 at the Grand Theater Lumiere of the Palais des Festivals.

In a statement, Luhrmann said: "F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside Saint-Raphael.”

The film was due to be released last Christmas but was pushed back by Warner Bros to ensure it "reaches the largest audience possible".
