Raphael drawing up for auction for $24 million

  • A drawing by Italian Renaissance artist Raphael is to go on sale in December with an estimated price tag of $16 to $24 million, auction house Sotheby’s announced on Tuesday.

    The 16th-century Head of an Apostle is a study for Raphael's last painting, Transfiguration, which is on display at the Vatican Museum in Rome.

    Measuring at 15 inches by 11 inches, the picture was drawn in black chalk. It is currently part of the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth in England and is on loan to the Prado Museum in Madrid as part of an exhibit of late Raphael works.

    In 2009, Raphael's black chalk drawing,Head of a Muse, sold for $46.3 million at Christie’s London.
