Pop star fan site operator to pay $1 million fine
October 5 , 2012
The operator behind fan websites for several pop stars is to pay $1 million to settle charges that it collected personal data about children
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alleged that Artist Arena collected e-mails, birth dates and names of some 100,000 children under the age of 13 without parental consent.
The operator ran sites for Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Rihanna, whose sites are now run by other businesses.
Artist Arena agreed to pay the fine but has not admitted to any wrongdoing.
It must now delete any information collected in violation of the law. The settlement is still to be approved by a judge.
