Legendary jazz clarinettist Acker Bilk dies

  • Acker Bilk, the legendary jazz clarinettist, has died at the age of 85, following a lengthy illness, according to media reports.

    Stranger on the Shore, one of his most popular numbers, was the best selling single in Britain in 1962, and made him globally famous.

    He was born Bernard Stanley Bilk in Somerset, but changed the name to Acker. Bilk dabbled with several careers before he got hooked on to clarinet while in the army.

    His last public performance was in 2013.
