Joan Rivers, comedian, dies aged 81

  • Joan Rivers, a US comedian whose career spanned nearly 50 years, has died at the age of 81.

    Her death was announced by her daughter, Melissa.

    Rivers, who was undergoing throat surgery, reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during the procedure in New York, and died after that.

    She first rose to popularity with The Tonight Show nearly five decades ago. Rivers was the first woman comedian to perform at the Carnegie Hall in New York, in 1983.
