First edition of The Hobbit fetches £137,000 at Sotheby's

  • A first edition of The Hobbit, the famous 1937 novel by JRR Tolkien, has sold for £137,000 at a London auction, beating the previous record when its first edition was sold for £60,000 in 2008.

The book, sold in the latest auction of children’s books and illustrated works at Sotheby’s, comes with an inscription written by the author in Elvish.

Tolkien had given the book to a student Katherine Kilbride in the 1920s.
