Charlie Chaplin's bowler hat and cane auctioned for over $60,000

  • One of Charlie Chaplin's bowler hats and a cane were sold for $62,500 on Sunday at an auction organized by Bonhams.

The hat and cane fetched more than the initial estimate of $40,000 to $60,000 and are symbolic of his “Little Tramp" character from films such as City Lights and Modern Times.

Bonhams memorabilia specialist Lucy Carr said it is not known how many of Chaplin's bowler hats and canes still exist.

Those auctioned on Sunday are from a private collection but have a direct link to Chaplin, Carr added

The clumsy "Little Tramp" character launched Chaplin to global stardom. The character was created by accident at Keystone Studios and first appeared in 1914's Kid Auto Races at Venice and lastly in 1936's Modern Times.
