Celebrities boycott the Academy Awards as racism row kicks in

  • A-list black celebrities like Will Smith, Jada Smith and Spike Lee will boycott next month’s Academy Awards in response to diversification of its membership and nominees. As per the revised rules, new members will be eligible for voting for a 10-year spell and must be active in the film industry, unlike the current lifetime doll-outs. Only post 3 consecutive stints will someone be handed a lifetime term. Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling’ comment that the Oscars are racist to whites has led to a major row. An all-white nomination list has further fuelled the speculation.
