Birdman, the opening film at Venice film festival

  • Birdman, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and starring Michael Keaton, will be the opening film at the 2014 Venice Film Festival, which runs from 27 August to 6 September in the Italian city.

    Other movies in the line-up, include Andrew Niccol's Good Kill, Manglehorn, and Ramin Bahrani's 99 Homes.

    A total of 55 films are part of the official selection of the prestigious festival. Others will be shown outside of competition.

    The Golden Era by Ann Hui, a filmmaker from Hong Kong, will close the festival.
