Beyonce and Jay-Z visited Cuba with U.S. Treasury Department permission
April 9 , 2013
A visit to Cuba by American pop star Beyonce and her rapper husband Jay-Z last week was a cultural trip that was fully licensed by the U.S. Treasury Department, according to a source familiar with the itinerary.
A longstanding U.S. economic embargo against Cuba prevents most Americans from traveling to the communist-led island without permission from the U.S. government.
The disclosure over the couple’s visit comes after two Cuban American members of Congress, both Republicans, had asked the Treasury Department on what type of license was obtained for the trip.
The visit was planned as a "people-to-people" cultural visit and involved no meetings with Cuban officials or typical tourist activity.
The source told Reuters news agency on Monday that the trip included visits with Cuban artists and musicians.
Beyonce and Jay-Z celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in Havana. The pair arrived in the Cuban capital unannounced for a four-day visit on Wednesday on a flight from Miami.
