Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe dies
August 9 , 2014
Peter Sculthorpe, a renowned Australian composer who used Aboriginal sounds in his classical music, has died aged 85.
One of his last major works was Requiem (2004) which combined orchestral music and the indigenous didgeridoo, an ancient instrument.
Born in Tasmania, Sculthorpe was officially called a living Australian icon. His musical influences were also drawn from other parts of the region such as South-East Asia and the Torres Strait Islands.
Tony Abbott, the prime minister of Australia, said Sculthorpe “much deepened Australia’s musical voice”.
