Actor Polly Bergen dies aged 84

  • Polly Bergen, the actor best known for her role in Cape Fear (1962) passed away peacefully in her sleep while at her home in Connecticut on 20 September, her publicist said. She was 84 years old.

    Polly Bergen’s most recent role was as in the TV series Desperate Housewives as Stella Wingfield, the mother of Lynette Scavo. A prolific actor, she worked well into her 70s when she played Fran Felstein, in HBO's The Sopranos, where she portrayed the former mistress of Tony Soprano's father.

    Polly Bergen won numerous awards, including a Golden Globe and was nominated for the Tony and Emmy awards. She wrote three books on beauty and established her own cosmetics, jewelry, and shoe brands.

    Her most famous role was in the 1962 version of Cape Fear, where she played Gregory Peck’s wife. Both of them made a cameo appearance in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 famous remake of the same film.
