Work emails after 6pm banned in France
April 14 , 2014
A new rule introduced in France makes sure the nation's 35-hour work week doesn't end up becoming 40 hours long due to email related to work.
Reports suggest that workers are forbidden from checking their devices for work after 6 pm and employers aren't allowed to pressurize them into doing so. The move doesn't involve all French workers but about 1M employees in the tech industry.
A US labor expert said it's hard to believe that the industry can deal with such a shut-off time. "There's always something going wrong off the clock - when a computer goes down, it doesn't go down between 8 am and 5 pm."
