Why is Aereo legal?

  • The Supreme Court is soon expected to hear from ABC, in which the network will talk about why pay service Aereo is piracy. "This, quite simply, goes against everything the broadcast industry has agreed to over the past 100 years," Aereo investor Barry Diller said.

Aereo is a pay service that enables people to stream TV content to any device that they wish to. The Obama administration is siding with the broadcasters who argue that they own the airwaves.

Diller mentioned that Aereo only sends programs to consumers over the cloud so it should be treated just like rabbit ears. By siding against it, Obama is implying "that preservation of legacy business models takes precedence over lawful technological innovation."
