US: Volkswagen ordered to recall half-a-million cars

  • US regulators have ordered Volkswagen to recall 500,000 cars that have a device which hides the pollution levels.

The device allows cars to pass tests even while emitting 40 times the required standards.

The recall may cost the German carmaker up to $18 billion. The models affected include Jettas, Audi A3s and Bettels.

A US official said that using such a “defeat device” was “illegal and a threat to public health”.
