US unemployment rate drops to six-year low of 5.9%

  • The United States unemployment rate has dropped to a six-year low of 5.9%, official data shows.

    The rate dipped from 6.1% in August, making it the lowest since July 2008.

    Employers added some 248,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said, and there has been an upward revision of job growth figures for July and August.

    In those two months, 69,000 additional jobs were created as compared to earlier estimates, the Labor Department said.
