US: Uber driver deemed to be an 'employee' by California Labor Commission

  • The California Labor Commission has deemed a Uber driver to be an employee instead of a contractor, a ruling which could have wide-ranging implications for the popular app-based taxi service.

The decision means the California-based driver has to be awarded over $4,000 in expenses for her period of work.

Uber has, however, stressed that the ruling only applies to the driver concerned, and previous rulings in various US states including California had deemed drivers to be contractors.
