US government shutdown averted, House passes budget
December 12 , 2014
Republicans allied with the White House as a late-night push helped pass the omnibus spending bill and avert a US government shutdown.
House Democrats raised vociferous objections to what they said was the influence of Wall Street lobbyists and others on the $1.1 trillion budget.
House speaker John Boehner finally got 219 votes, just one extra than the votes needed to make sure the bill passed.
Both parties were split on the bill, with 67 Republicans voting ‘no’.
