Up to 40M shoppers hit by Target breach

  • Many in-store Black Friday shoppers might be in trouble: Target reported that about 40 million debit and credit cards have been hacked and the chain is currently investigating a breach at its stores.

According to Target, online shoppers appear to be safe but those who made purchases at its stores in the US between Nov. 20 and Dec. 15 may be affected.

The Krebs report said these hackers could "create counterfeit cards by encoding the information onto any card with a magnetic stripe." The thieves might be able to reproduce these debit cards in order to use them at the ATM.

Reports suggest that the Secret Service and a third-party forensics firm are looking into the issue. Those who see any suspicious activity on their cards can call 866-852-8680.
