United States suspends trade benefits for Bangladesh
June 28 , 2013
The United States has suspended trade benefits for Bangladesh until it improves safety conditions for workers in the garment sector, the White House announced on Thursday.
The Bangladeshi government has vowed to improve safety following the Rana Plaza collapse in Dhaka in April that killed 1,129 people.
The collapse of Rana Plaza is one of the world's worst industrial accidents.
Bangladesh is the world's second biggest exporter of clothing after China.
It has had an average of one accident every year since 2000.
Around 1,200 lives were lost in the garment sector in the past year.
