Twinkies-maker to close down

  • The maker of Twinkies, the popular American cream-filled sponge cakes, is to close shop resulting in the loss of 18,500 jobs.

    On Friday, Hostess Brands said a strike by the bakers union had forced it to close all operations and sell all assets.

    The firm has been trouble over recent years, emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2009 only to file again in January 2012.

    The shutdown will results in the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centres and 570 bakery outlet stores.

    The company is also behind the Wonder and Merita bread brands along with Drake’s cakes.

    Hostess Brands was set up in 1930 and reported revenues of $2 billion last year.
