Trial run held on second Suez Canal amid tight security

  • Egypt has held a trial run on the second Suez Canal ahead of its official opening in August.

The first international cargo ships passed through the new waterway amid heavy security.

The construction of the 44-mile route along the border of the Sinai Peninsula started less than a year ago, and it can accommodate two-way traffic as well as larger ships.

Islamist militant groups have made the Sinai Peninsula their base in the past few years.

The canal project is believed to have cost more than $8 billion.
