Toyota is now expected to pay $1.2B in order to end a four-year-long investigation by the Justice Department. The US history hasn't seen a larger criminal penalty against a car company than this one.
"Today we can say for certain that Toyota intentionally concealed information and misled the public about the safety issues behind these recalls," attorney general Eric Holder said. He said the conduct was the company is "shameful."
FBI investigations have proved that the company was aware of the issue being larger than it portrayed it to be and a Toyota spokesman recently announced that the car company has made changes and is working on its responsiveness.
