Supercarrier sold for a penny
October 25 , 2013
A Navy carrier once referred to as being the biggest ship to have ever been built was sold to All Star Metals for a penny.
The USS Forrestal will be towed to All Star Metals' facility in Texas and be scrapped there.
The ship, which was the first supercarrier of the Navy was launched in 1954 and decommissioned in 1993. Maintenance on the ship became costly and the Navy couldn't get "viable applications" when it attempted to hand over the historic ship to a museum or have it turned into a memorial.
A USS Forrestal Association historian mentioned that the Navy was "caught between a rock and a hard place."
