Russian tycoon Usmanov tops Britain's Sunday Times Rich List

  • Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov has been ranked by the Sunday Times as the wealthiest person in Britain and Ireland with a fortune of $20.6 billion.

    The 59-year-old tycoon has a 30 percent stake in Arsenal soccer club and owns iron-ore producer Metalloinvest.

    Warner Music's Len Blavatnik comes next in the list with $16.8 billion.

    In third place are brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja of the London-based global conglomerate Hinduja Group, with their fortune of $16.1 billion.

    Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal's $15.2 billion comes in number four.

    The highest British-born person is the Duke of Westminster at eighth place with $11.9 billion from property.

    The 1,000 richest people in Britain and Ireland share a combined wealth of $685 billion. There are a record 88 billionaires in the list compared to 77 in 2012.

    There were just nine when the rich list was launched in 1989 and the Queen was in first place.
