Obama set to sign bill imposing new sanctions on Russia
December 17 , 2014
The White House has said that US president Barack Obama will sign a bill that imposes fresh sanctions against Russia.
The bill, which predominantly targets the Russian defense industry, was passed with bipartisan consensus in Congress.
Josh Earnest, the White House spokesperson, said that though the bill sent “a confusing message” to allies, the US president would sign it as it “preserves flexibility”.
Russia is facing an economic crisis, with its currency plunging due to low oil prices and western sanctions.
