New coffee shop calls itself 'Dumb Starbucks'
February 11 , 2014
A new coffee shop in Los Angeles calls itself "Dumb Starbucks" and uses the same logo and beverage names used by the actual Starbucks. Hence the coffee shop attaches the word "Dumb" in front of all the drink names and even the CDs displayed on the counter carry titles such as Dumb Jazz.
The store opened Friday and is legal because of the presence of "parody law."
"For legal reasons Dumb Starbucks needs to be categorized as a work of parody art," the FAQ reads. "So, in the eyes of the law, our 'coffee shop' is actually an art gallery and the 'coffee' you're buying is considered the art."
A rep for the actual Starbucks mentioned that the company is looking into the matter and the store is "obviously not a Starbucks."
