Mine disaster: Brazil government to sue mining firms BHP and Vale for $5bn

  • Brazil is suing mining firms BHP Billiton and Vale for $5.2 billion following the collapse of a dam at an iron ore mine that led to the flow of 60 million cubic meters of mud and mine into the Atlantic ocean and killed at least 13 people.

The Brazilian environment minister Izabella Teixeira said a suit would demand that the two firms and their co-owned mine operator Samarco create a 20 billion reais fund for compensation of victims and environmental recovery.
