Judge sees no emergency in the case of teen suing parents
March 6 , 2014
A high school senior in New Jersey who is suing her parents for school and college tuition asked for an emergency order for over $600 each week. However, judge Peter Bogaard mentioned that there's no such emergency in Rachel Canning's case since she would be allowed to continue her education despite owing money and the deadlines for college applications aren't until May.
The AP noted that Bogaard spoke about parents establishing rules for their children: "Are we going to open the gates for 12-year-olds to sue for an Xbox? For 13-year-olds to sue for an iPhone?"
Canning and her parents barely looked at each other during the hearing and the case is now expected to go on trial. The parents' lawyer holds that the child is now emancipated since she left home by choice.
