Japanese manufacturer Takata to recall 34 million defective airbags

  • Takata, the Japanese airbag maker, has said that airbags of nearly 34 million cars have faulty mechanisms, leading to what will be the largest recall in American history, with cars from 11 firms affected.

The new figures are double than the previous estimate of defective airbags made by Takata.

Anthony Fox, the US transportation secretary, said that this was a “major step forward” for public safety.

The transport department will “ensure” that the defective airbags are replaced with safe ones “as quickly as possible.”
